Competitors in 2025 completing the 800 yard swim.

Swim

(Sprint – 800 yards / Super-Sprint – 400 yards)

The 800-yard swim is held in the 25-yard base pool. Swimmers are grouped by pace in waves of 20, with 4 athletes per lane.

Athletes will begin with a staggered feet-first entry (2–5 second intervals) to manage course density. Our deck volunteers will provide a "flutter board warning" at the 750-yard mark to signal your final lap. After finishing, exit right and move towards the emergency doors and continue to the Transition Area (Tennis Courts).

Bike

(Sprint – 20.5 km / Super-Sprint – 11.8 km)

The bike course is held entirely on the operational side of CFB Edmonton, utilizing low-traffic roads and the retired runway for a high-speed, traffic-free experience. The route is a 95% closed course; while traffic control will prioritize racers at all intersections, emergency vehicles always maintain right-of-way.

The course is divided into three stages, providing 6 Strava segment opportunities (hyperlinks provided below):

1. The Infill

The route commences at the intersection of Range Rd 244 and Churchill Ave.

  • Proceed East on Churchill Ave for approximately 1.7km.

  • The route naturally turns North (left) onto Korea Road and continue for 800m.

  • At the intersection with Leonforte Rd, turn East (Right) to enter the Encirclement.

2. The Encirclement (Laps)

Sprint Athletes: 2 Loops | Super-Sprint Athletes: 1 Loop Note: Athletes are responsible for tracking their own lap count; however, officials will verify completion via timing mats.

  • The Runway: Proceed East on Leonforte Rd for 400m, then veer 45 degrees Right to travel South-East down the runway. Stay to the Right side, passing the Range Control hut, and continue for 3km to the designated turnaround point.

  • The Landing: Head North-West for 3.3km, passing the 3rd Canadian Division Parade Square. At the Lord Strathcona’s Horse (Royal Canadians) compound barrier, turn South-West (Left) for 100m, then North-West (Right) into the VIP Parking strip.

  • The Compound Loop: Pass 1 Combat Engineer Regiment and continue toward the 1st Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry compound. Immediately after the crosswalk, turn South-West (Right) onto Ortona Ave. After 400m, turn South-East (Right) onto Italy Ave, passing 1 CMBG Headquarters.

  • Completion: Turn East (Right) on Vimy Ave. After passing the Base Hospital and the rainbow crosswalk there is 200m prior to the loop is complete.

    • To Start Loop 2: Move to the Left Lane.

    • To Exit (Exfil): Stay in the Right Lane and turn Right onto Korea Road.

3. The Exfil

The exit route is the inverse of the Infill:

  • Travel South on Korea Road for 800m.

  • Follow the natural curve onto Churchill Ave heading West.

  • Upon reaching Range Rd 244, prepare to decelerate for the Dismount Line.

Run

(Sprint – 5 km / Super-Sprint – 2.5 km)

The run course will be on the northern half of the base paved running trails. There will be a different route for each event, with Sprint athletes exiting transition and turning LEFT and Super-Sprint athletes turning RIGHT. Please note that the Finish Line has been relocated from previous years to the East side of the field, adjacent to the transition area (not yet reflected in the map.

Sprint Distance (5km) - A looped paved flat route

  • The Start: Exit Transition and turn Left, heading South on the running path. Follow the natural curve as it bends West.

  • The Fields & Forest: Behind the Base Arena (approx. 200m after the bend), turn North (Right) to complete a "U" around the soccer fields. Turn West (Right) toward the forest.

  • The Trail: Enter the forest and follow the paved track. At the T-junction, turn North (Right) and continue to follow the weaving paved trail.

  • Hydration & Open Prairie: 300m after exiting the forest, a water station will be available on the left near the outdoor workout stand. Continue North into the open prairie. The second half of the run will offer increased winds for cooling and increased challenge.

  • The Homestretch: After 1km, follow the path to the right, heading West and then South for the final stretch.

  • The Finish: 50m after passing the Base Auto Club, stay to the Right at the fork. 100m later, turn Right onto the grass field and enter the U-shaped finishing chute.

Super-Sprint (2.5km) - an out-and-back paved flat route

  • The Out-and-Back: Exit Transition and turn Right, heading North on the running path.

  • The Turnaround: Continue for 1.1km until you reach the designated turnaround point located just past the cluster of trees.

  • The Finish: Return South for 1.1km before turning Right into the grass fields to complete the U-shaped finishing chute.

5km Run (Run-Only Event)

  • The Route: Athletes will follow the exact same 5km route as the Sprint Triathlon with the Exception the starting line for this event is located on the grass field near the finish line, rather than exiting from transition.

Transition

Both transitions will be centralized in the Tennis Courts.

T1: Swim to Bike

The Inflow (Blue on map)

  • Exit Pool: Upon exiting the pool emergency doors, turn Right and follow the marked lane (mine tape) to the South-West entrance of the tennis courts.

  • The "Equalizer" Path: Once inside, athletes must run along the Left fence line to the half-court mark. This ensures all athletes cover the same distance regardless of their rack location.

  • To the Bike: Turn Right and proceed to your assigned lane (organized by race number).

The Outflow (Purple on map)

  • The Exit: Secure your helmet and unrack your bike. Run your bike toward the South-East corner to exit the courts.

The Inflow (Bright Green on map)

  • Dismount: Athletes must be fully dismounted before crossing the Dismount Line on the running path, just West of Range Road 244.
